Celem eseju jest pokazanie, w jaki sposób można badać historię diecezji warszawsko-praskiej, wykorzystując osiągnięcia współczesnej historiografii. W pierwszej części autor opisuje zmiany, jakie zaszły w ostatnich dwóch stuleciach w historiografii, także tej katolickiej, koncentrując się szczególnie na przejściu od historii politycznej, wydarzeniowej, instytucjonalnej do historii społecznej, mentalnościowej, oddolnej. W drugiej części zaś została przedstawiona propozycja wykorzystania socjologicznej teorii budowania tożsamości zbiorowej w celu opowiedzenia o początkach istnienia diecezji warszawsko-praskiej. Autor sugeruje konieczność przeprowadzenia badań, których celem byłoby ustalenie, w jaki sposób i z jakim skutkiem kształtowało się poczucie przynależności do nowej warszawskiej diecezji wśród kleru i świeckich.
The purpose of the essay is to show how the history of the Warsaw-Praga diocese can be studied in the context of changes in the contemporary historiography. In the first part the author describes the transformations that have taken place in the last two centuries in the Catholic historiography, in particular the shift from political, event and institutional history to social, cultural history from below. In the second part the author puts forward an idea to use the collective identity building theory in order to recount the beginnings of the Warsaw-Praga diocese. The author suggests carrying out research on how and with what effect it has been created a sense of belonging to the new Warsaw-Praga diocese among clergy and laity.
