Descensus ad inferos

Abstract

Zstąpienie Chrystusa do królestwa zmarłych, określane jako „zstąpienie do piekieł”, od początku intrygowało całe chrześcijaństwo. Na kartach Nowego Testamentu descensus Christi obrazowany jest m.in. u Mt 12,40; 27,51b-53; Rz 10,7; Dz 2,24-28; Ef 4,8-10; Hbr 12,23; 13,20; Ap 1,18. Temat ten żywo występuje także u św. Justyna, św. Klemensa Aleksandryjskiego, Orygenesa, św. Augustyna, św. Grzegorza Wielkiego i innych. Znane jest także stanowisko urzędowe Kościoła (DH 369, 485, 739, 801, 1011, 1077). Współcześnie – dla niektórych teologów – uchodzi on niestety za „przestarzały” i nieaktualny. Stąd koniecznym wydaj e się naświetlenie całej rzeczywistości „zstąpienia Chrystusa do piekieł” od strony biblijnej, systematycznej, sensologicznej, teologicznej, a także solidarnościowej, aby następnie uwypuklić to wydarzenie jako wydarzenie zbawcze o zasięgu uniwersalnym. Dzisiejsza teologia winna widzieć omawianą tu tajemnicę integralnie, w całym misterium życia, męki, śmierci i zmartwychwstania Jezusa Chrystusa. Zstąpienie Chrystusa do piekieł uwyraźnia przede wszystkim odkupienie przez Chrystusa całej ludzkości, a więc także zmarłych przed Jego męką krzyżową. Jest to więc akt całkowitego wypełnienia ewangelicznego głoszenia zbawienia. Przy tym Jezus Chrystus zstąpił do piekieł nie dla wyzwolenia potępionych, czy dla zniesienia piekła, lecz dla zwyciężenia śmierci i wyzwolenia sprawiedliwych, którzy Go poprzedzili w śmierci (por. DH 485; KKK 633).

Christ’s descent to the kingdom of the dead, referred to as His „descent into hell” has always been intriguing to Christianity. The New Testament depicts descensus Christi in, among others, Matt 12:40; 27:5lb-53; Rom 10,7; Acts 2,24-28; Eph 4,8-10; Heb 12,23; 13,20; Rev 1,18. This topic was also repetitively discussed by St. Justin, St Clement of Alexandria, Origen, St. Augustine, St. Gregory the Great and others. The Church also spoke on the matter officially (DH 369, 485, 739, 801, 1011, 1077). Unfortunately, some contemporary theologians find the topic “outdated” and uninteresting. This is why it is important to shed light on the whole event of Christ’s descent to hell from the biblical, systematic, sensological and theological perspective as well as in terms of solidarity, so as to finally highlight the descent as a redemptive event of universal validity. Contemporary theology should look at the mystery of the descent in an integral way, in the context of the life, passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Christ’s descent to hell serves first of all to pinpoint His redemptive mission towards the whole humankind, also including those who had died before his crucifixion. Thus, the descent to hell makes part of the act of complete fulfilment of the evangelical mission to announce redemption. It must also be emphasised that Christ did not descent into hell in order to free the condemned, but to defeat death and free the just who had died before him (cf. DH 485; CCC 633).
