Abstract

Before the rise of Newtonian physics and the discovery of stellar paralax by Bessel it was impossible to prove superiority of Galilean astronomy over Ptolemaic or Tychonic counterproposals. The intellectual difficulties of the heliocentric astronomy cannot justify, however, its legal condemnation. The sentence of 1633 disregarded opinions of many theologians who argued that Biblical teaching can be reconciled with the heliocentric astronomy. In such a context the sentence discloses deplorable supremacy of legal regulations over the theological doctrine.
