dc.description.abstract The Prophets give no scientific definition of sin but the numerous and various descriptions of its malice with they give describe that problem sufficiently. Amos: The malice of sin manifests itself first of all in social life, that is in various forms of extortion and injustice. Sin is rooted in such a disposition of the soul which refuses to accept the law of God or misinterprets it. Hosea: Sin consists in the people’s opposition to plans of God. A popular way of expression of such a state is the frequent use of the description „adultery“: those called to sanctity have become adulterers. The strength of sin is terrifying the people has betrayed Yahwe, has forsaken Him, has rebelled against Him. Isaiah: The essence of sin consist in a revolt of human pride against the great and sollicitous God. Human pride is associated with treason to God, with indifference to the divine cause, with light-mindedness in estimating the reality, with slight for Yahwe’s law and for the Prophet’s admonishments and with treating them with irony. In national and politicai life sin manifests itself in the departure from the traditional line of theocracy and of trust in God towards the people’s own human forms of government of defence. Micaiah: Sin turned the chosen people of Israel into an enemy of God. Facts from its remote history on the one hand confirm Yahwe’s fidelity in keeping the Covenant and on the other hand they charge the people with a heavy fault. Israel cannot produce any evidence to justify their bad conduct. The punishing tribunal will prosecute those guilty of this state of things. Jeremiah: But he Prophet’s coming into contact with the sinful people fills him with pessimsm. The sin grows to a stupendous extent: even offerings of human beings to strange deities can be met with and injustice in human relations has reached its summit. Evil has been growing in cessantly and thiat is why it appears to the Prophet to be an incomprehensible power, a mystery filling him with apprehension. pl_PL
